The AWWA YCC Crew Leader is a key member of the team, working to protect water quality in the lakes and ponds of Wakefield, NH and Acton, ME. AWWA is seeking applicants for our Youth Conservation Corps crew. Check out our Youth Conservation Corps page for general information on our YCC program.

As a YCC crew member, you will be part of a team working to implement erosion control and water quality improvement measures. An additional and important goal of the YCC is to educate residents of the watersheds about good land management practices that can prevent erosion and pollution. Projects will usually be visible from the water and may attract the interest of neighbors and boaters. Since the crew will be public representatives of the Acton Wakefield Watersheds Alliance (AWWA) and the YCC, their behavior on the job site should always be helpful and courteous to property owners, members of the public and other crew. We also expect that crewmembers will be enthusiastic supporters of the program and pass on their knowledge to family and friends so this program will grow and multiply in our watershed and beyond. Crew members will be trained and supervised by the Crew Leader and follow their instructions to implement erosion control landscaping projects. The work can be physically demanding as all work is done with hand tools.

Duties include but are not necessarily limited to:

1. Planting riparian buffers to catch water and sediment;

2. Stabilizing trails by redirecting them, and/or filling with crushed stone or mulch;

3. Installing water bars to redirect runoff;

4. Digging infiltration trenches and dry wells to collect runoff;

5. Installing infiltration steps to slow water flow and collect sediment;

Education/Skills/Attitudes Required This position requires a person who can interact and work well with others and follow the directions of the crew leader. Preference will be given to full or part-time residents of either Acton or Wakefield. All crew members must have transportation to and from our office each work day. The recommended minimum age is 16, although 15 years-old’s may be considered with parental consent.

Working Relationships/Accountability Crew members are employees of the Acton Wakefield Watersheds Alliance (AWWA). Crew answer directly to the crew leader and to the Program Manager. The Program Manager sets the schedule, work sites, and procedures, and communicates this information to the crew leader, who passes it on to the crew. In case of questions or problems, the first person to contact is the Crew Leader. It is expected that the Crew Leader will check in with the crew members on a regular basis and provide feedback on performance. While crew is directly supervised by the Crew Leader and responsible to the Program Manager, they are ultimately accountable to the AWWA Board of Directors.
